Family Password Managers vs. Business Tools: What's the Difference?

1Password Business, Bitwarden Teams, Dashlane Business — they're excellent tools. WarpDesk isn't trying to be them. Here's the actual difference.

The org unit

Business tools are organized around a company, with teams and departments underneath. WarpDesk is organized around a family. That single choice cascades everywhere.

Permissions

Business tools need fine-grained per-item ACLs so accounting can see finance stuff but not engineering stuff. Families rarely need that. WarpDesk keeps permissions coarse to reduce operational overhead.

SSO

Business tools live and die by SSO integration (Okta, Google Workspace, Azure AD). WarpDesk has no SSO — a family doesn't need it.

Compliance

Business tools get audited for SOC 2, HIPAA, etc. WarpDesk isn't there yet and doesn't currently target households that need those attestations.

Onboarding and offboarding

In a business, offboarding is a legal event with an audit trail. In a family, it's usually a conversation. WarpDesk optimizes for the latter.

Billing

Business tools are per-seat with volume discounts. WarpDesk is per-family with a small member limit — the shape families actually pay for.

Where they overlap

Both encrypt at rest, both do 2FA, both have activity logs, both work on mobile. The core primitives are similar; the surrounding surfaces differ.

When to use a business tool anyway

If your household is running a small business out of it, use the business tool. Don't mix personal and commercial in the same vault.

A worked example

A freelancer with a family uses Bitwarden Business for client credentials and WarpDesk for household credentials. Two tools, two contexts, no leakage between them.

Wrap it up

The right tool depends on what unit you're organizing around. Both product categories are legit. They're not competitors — they're neighbors.
